In her piece on the The Catacombs, the 1970s San Francisco-based fistfucking club, Gayle Rubin provided a “music of the baths” playlist that was curated for its S/M loving patrons: “the party tapes relied primarily on disco and electronic space music, although there were also rock, soul, funk, and other genres.” Such spacey songs included soundtracks to movies like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Star Wars, as well as trippy, elevator-to-Mars-type tracks like Jean Michel Jarre’s “Oxygene” and Klaus Schulze’s album Timewind –to be played late at night into the early morning, as Rubin noted. The rest of the playlist included hard-hitting rock songs from Kiss and Rick James as well as the Skatt Brothers, whose music was made for fist pumping in every direction. Then, to balance the intensity of this bathhouse dungeon, came more familiar campy 1970s gay music standards from Amanda Lear, Elton John, and Donna Summer, whose songs surely made every fistfucker use their other hand to extend their finger into the air and boogie!
This music of The Catacombs is the basis for our own fistfucker of a playlist: Filthy Dreams’ Hold onto Your Love Bathhouse Bunker Buster Pride Playlist. The bathhouse vibe is alive and well, we just don’t know it yet! While bathhouses and S/M clubs once hovered near or above ground in basements and rooftop pools, now they are now to be found down hundreds of feet underground. Cased around by miles of thick bomb-shelter concrete! Glamour! The vibes for this year’s Pride seem low, and for good reason: the party is to be found way below the reach of nuclear annihilation. That’s right! No bunker bomb can destroy this music! And we’ve got the music to keep both you and the air vents pumping! This year’s Pride playlist includes a medley of 1970s gay bathhouse songs, sad sack gay songs to make you cry while the bombs drop and your lover ghosts you, and gay songs to keep that fist a’pumping! Amor fati, queens!
